Teenage Boot Camp
5th - 10th August 2012
5 nights 6 days £645.00
Our residential course is open to children and young adults aged between 12 and 17 years of age. This fantastic activity-based camp is specially designed for weight loss and fitness, and is underpinned by a tasty yet healthy nutrition programme. Our course is delivered to the highest standards, where your child will make new friends, feel more confident and enjoy a whole host of adventures along the way. We aim to develop children’s self esteem, self motivation and resilience so that they maintain progress long after the Boot camp ends. We cater for all shapes, weights and fitness levels, and the programme isn't a 'one size fits all' - it is tailored to the needs of the individual child/young person.
At a time when 1 in 3 children in the UK is identified as being overweight or obese, and 70% of overweight 11-year-olds go on to be obese young adults, it has never been more important for children to adopt healthy eating habits from an early age. Apart from the obvious health risks, overweight children often find themselves victims of bullying and are more at risk of social exclusion. The focus of our course is to help your child make healthy lifestyle changes and develop emotional intelligence, as this will help them to regulate their behaviour and go for long term fulfilment rather than instant pleasure which soon evaporates.
The Course
Our course consists of an exciting range of activities with the emphasis firmly on fun and enjoyable exercising – getting fit without realising it! Our activities start first thing in the morning, and continue until the evening meal, with no two days the same. Typically our programme includes:
- Ball sports
- Initiative exercises
- Orienteering
- Beach games
- Dance Mats
- Team challenges
- Obstacle Courses
- Boxing circuits
- Swimming
- Dance Mats
- Excursions & day trips
- Abseiling
After the evening meal, ‘down time’ is spent relaxing, competing in team quizzes, ‘Boot Camp’s Got Talent’ or simply watching your favourite DVD in the TV room.
‘Yes Chef’!
Healthy eating is critical to successful weight loss and long term wellbeing, and so every child will spend valuable time in the kitchen with our resident chef helping to menu plan, prepare and cook tasty meals for the group - all the while learning about the nutritional value of the various food groups and the importance of portion control! From healthy pizza and chunky home-made chips to colourful salads and low calorie cakes, Lileen keeps everyone well fed and well informed throughout the course.
Camp HQ
Our camp is based from a comfortable country lodge located on a spectacular Highland Estate. The rooms have either 2 or 3 beds, and are en-suite. Both male and female staff members remain on site for the whole duration of the course, ensuring a safe and secure environment for your child.
Parents Information
You can trust Scottish Boot Camp to take your children’s welfare and happiness very seriously indeed. We aim to create an environment where your child is not just physically
safe, but feels safe. Our highly trained staff members are all vetted by Disclosure Scotland and have extensive experience working with children and young adults. Each activity is fully risk assessed to ensure the highest safety standards at every level without compromising our goal to let children try out new sports and gain independence. There is mobile phone reception on-site, and calls home can be made in the evening after dinner at 1900hrs.
Meet TheTeam
Our team comprises the following permanent staff members, and is supplemented during the course with an additional range of specialists teaching a wide variety of outdoor activities:
Alan Esler (aka Paddy)
Paddy is the course leader, and he has a wealth of experience working with children and young adults. He is an ASA qualified swimming instructor and teaches children from the age of 3 upwards, and he is also a Level 2 qualified athletics coach teaching children from primary age upwards. Paddy currently works with high school PE department staff within the Highland Region with an initiative to encourage health promotion and sports in schools.
As a Petty Officer and Careers Advisor in the Royal Navy, Paddy liaised with high schools, colleges and universities working with young people to develop communication skills and interview techniques, and ran team-building workshops to develop valuable skills for life. He also led physical training sessions for Cadet Forces, Boys Brigade and the Scouts (both male and female), and was Youth Development Officer and coach for rugby. He was the Royal Navy co-ordinator for children’s summer activity holidays for Forces families based in Naples.
Sara Dwyer
Sara has worked extensively with both primary and secondary children within schools and leisure facilities in the Highland region. She has been a fitness instructor since 1999, and holds many teaching qualifications including the CYQ Level 2 Health Related Exercise for Children certification. As a parent of 4 children, she has the experience, understanding (and patience!) required to successfully help deliver the course programme.
Lileen Esler
Lileen is a fully qualified and experienced chef, and during her time in the Royal Navy worked as an advisor to parents on healthy nutrition and lifestyle for children within the Forces community. In addition, she devised and ran numerous educational nutritional workshops for personnel within the Navy. In her role as camp chef, her on-going professional development training in nutrition ensures that she effectively helps children address food issues in a very practical and enjoyable manner.
Major Milo
Milo is employed to actively seek and retrieve any contraband smuggled into camp ie chocolate biscuits. He used to be a long haired golden retriever, but Staff Al sent him to the barbers for an Army No 2 all over, and he came out a Labrador. When he feels the cold (he is 8 years old) he feels an unstoppable urge to put on a Scottish Boot Camp T-shirt. During down time in the evenings, he enjoys being pampered by the boot campers and dreams of leftovers. He's also on facebook, check it out.

• A culture where all staff, working in partnership with parents, have the highest expectations of every child and young person
• A culture where improving the health, fitness and self-esteem for children and
young people is our top priority
• A culture committed to the continuous professional development of our staff
• Comprehensive assessment of each child/young person when they start the Boot Camp, to establish the baseline against which progress is evaluated
• Frequent and regular observations of each child/young person to assess progress, identify needs and to plan the next steps
• The provision of a broad and balanced experience matched to the child’s age, aptitude and ability and based on best international practice and knowledge of fitness and nutrition
• An experience that is focused on meeting the immediate needs of the child and preparing the child for growing up in the 21st century. One that promotes success and develops in each child skills for life-long learning and personal growth.
• An experience that develops personal qualities such as diligence, persistence, resilience, concentration, attentiveness, determination, independence and problem solving and the development of key attributes including respect thoughtfulness and adaptability.
An experience which prepares children and young adults for the next stage of their life and for life-long learning
The course is based on the belief that self regulation, the ability to control emotions and behaviour, is key to social and academic success and physical well being. Scottish Boot Camp nurtures children’s independence and self confidence through the provision of resources and activities which allow young people to make their own choices in their activities and eating patterns in their daily routines after they leave boot camp. We work closely with parents to share expectations, and communicate the importance of developing these self-regulatory skills in order to cope confidently with their transition to adult life.
